Churma
Ingredients for Dal:
- 1 cup Toor dal (split pigeon peas)
- 1 medium-sized onion, finely chopped
- 1 medium-sized tomato, finely chopped
- 2 green chilies, chopped
- 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp red chili powder
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- 1 tsp garam masala powder
- Salt, to taste
- Water, as required
- 2 tbsp oil
Ingredients for Churma:
- 1 cup wheat flour
- 1/4 cup ghee (clarified butter)
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup chopped almonds
- Water, as required
Instructions:
- To make the dal, wash the Toor dal in water and soak it for 30 minutes.
- Heat oil in a pressure cooker and add cumin seeds and mustard seeds.
- Once the seeds start to splutter, add chopped onions and green chilies. Saute until the onions turn translucent.
- Add ginger-garlic paste and saute for a minute.
- Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn mushy.
- Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, garam masala powder, and salt. Mix well.
- Add the soaked Toor dal to the cooker and add water to cover the dal completely.
- Pressure cook for 3-4 whistles or until the dal is cooked well and becomes soft and mushy.
- Once cooked, open the cooker and mix the dal well. Keep aside.
- To make the churma, add wheat flour to a mixing bowl and make a well in the center.
- Add ghee to the center and mix well with the flour to get a crumbly texture.
- Add water little by little and knead into a stiff dough.
- Pinch small portions of the dough and shape them into small balls.
- Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F. Place the wheat balls on a baking tray and bake them for 10-12 minutes, or until they turn golden brown.
- Once done, remove them from the oven and let them cool down.
- Break the balls into small pieces and crumble them into a bowl.
- Add powdered sugar and chopped almonds to the crumbled wheat and mix well.
- To serve, place a serving of dal in a bowl and top it with a generous amount of churma.
