 Ingredients for Dal:

  • 1 cup Toor dal (split pigeon peas)
  • 1 medium-sized onion, finely chopped
  • 1 medium-sized tomato, finely chopped
  • 2 green chilies, chopped
  • 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala powder
  • Salt, to taste
  • Water, as required
  • 2 tbsp oil

Ingredients for Churma:

  • 1 cup wheat flour
  • 1/4 cup ghee (clarified butter)
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup chopped almonds
  • Water, as required

Instructions:

  1. To make the dal, wash the Toor dal in water and soak it for 30 minutes.
  2. Heat oil in a pressure cooker and add cumin seeds and mustard seeds.
  3. Once the seeds start to splutter, add chopped onions and green chilies. Saute until the onions turn translucent.
  4. Add ginger-garlic paste and saute for a minute.
  5. Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn mushy.
  6. Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, garam masala powder, and salt. Mix well.
  7. Add the soaked Toor dal to the cooker and add water to cover the dal completely.
  8. Pressure cook for 3-4 whistles or until the dal is cooked well and becomes soft and mushy.
  9. Once cooked, open the cooker and mix the dal well. Keep aside.
  10. To make the churma, add wheat flour to a mixing bowl and make a well in the center.
  11. Add ghee to the center and mix well with the flour to get a crumbly texture.
  12. Add water little by little and knead into a stiff dough.
  13. Pinch small portions of the dough and shape them into small balls.
  14. Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F. Place the wheat balls on a baking tray and bake them for 10-12 minutes, or until they turn golden brown.
  15. Once done, remove them from the oven and let them cool down.
  16. Break the balls into small pieces and crumble them into a bowl.
  17. Add powdered sugar and chopped almonds to the crumbled wheat and mix well.
  18. To serve, place a serving of dal in a bowl and top it with a generous amount of churma.
